Objectives

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to evaluate their existing publishing activities and identify areas for development. They will also be able to initiate new publishing activities. At the end of the workshop participants will have a draft outline strategy for development.

Target Audience:

Editors and publishing managers of existing journals, plus those in the process of developing or considering new publishing programmes. The workshop will be suitable for editors or publishers who have experience of journal publishing, plus those who have some experience or an interest in developing new programmes. Note that the emphasis of the course will be primarily editorial development rather than business or financial development.

Pre-Requisites:

Participants should ideally have experience of working on a journal (either in an editorial or publishing or management capacity). All participants should have some understanding of the journals publishing environment.

Methodology

The course will require participation of all delegates and will be highly interactive with discussion sessions and other activities.

      1. Globalisation of research, Print versus online journals: The new journals: Access to research – the influences of money, funders and governments
    2. How your existing journal(s) fit into this landscape
      1. Identifying Strengths and Weaknesses, Comparing your journal and institution against the Competition
  2. Opportunities
    1. Technology
      1. Online systems for capturing, managing and publishing content, linking and identification systems to regulate the publishing environment
    2. New practices
      1. Different types of journals and other publishing outlets; the influence of social media, metrics for measuring impact

Day 2

  1. Improving the Content
    1. Supporting Authors
      1. Managing author problems, providing support and resources
    2. Quality Control
      1. Peer review, methods and problems
    3. Ethics
      1. Ethical guidelines, dealing with problems
  2. Building a Strategy
    1. Editorial Strategies, Production Strategies, Promotional Strategies, Business Strategies
      1. Developing a plan, objectives, goals and actions – practical session
