Launched in 2024, Al Wusul is the first bilingual journal dedicated to open science in the Arab world. Published in both Arabic and English, Al Wusul was created to highlight and support the growing role of open science policies and practices across the region. The journal offers a space for researchers, librarians, and policymakers to share innovative solutions, address regional challenges, and collaborate on new projects.
The name Al Wusul, meaning “reach” in Arabic, reflects the journal’s core mission to make research accessible and free to all. It is derived from the Arabic phrase الوصول الحر, which translates to “free or Open Access,” stressing the journal’s commitment to providing open and unrestricted access to knowledge.
Owned by the Knowledge E Foundation and serving as the official journal for the Forum for Open Research in MENA (FORM). This partnership strengthens the journal’s mission to advance open science in the Middle East and North Africa, providing a platform for fresh ideas and cross-institutional collaborations.
With three issues published yearly, one of which will feature select papers from FORM’s Annual Forum for Open Research, Al Wusul aims to be an essential resource for anyone interested in diving into the future of research in the MENA region, the evolution of different publishing models, and a rounded understanding of the initiatives and potential shaping open science in the region.
As a Diamond Open Access journal, Al Wusul is committed to providing free access to all of its research, ensuring that its work is available without subscription fees. The peer review process is rigorous and transparent, with each submission undergoing double-blind review by experts in the field to maintain high academic standards. The editorial team facilitates communication between authors and reviewers, ensuring constructive feedback and a transparent process that results in the publication of only the most well-researched papers.
The publication is led by two distinguished experts: Dr Alwaleed K. Alkhaja, the Senior Intellectual Property Librarian at Qatar National Library, serving as the Editor-in-Chief and Dr Emily Choynowski, the Director of Operations at FORM.
