Empowering Education in Nepal: The Knowledge E Foundation’s Contribution to Lakhnawar School

empowering nepal

Education is a powerful tool that transforms lives and uplifts communities. The Knowledge E Foundation, in partnership with Dubai Cares, has been instrumental in making quality education accessible to children in Lakhnawar, Nepal. Through the Dubai Cares Adopt a School Initiative, the foundation has helped construct a new primary school, providing a safe and inspiring learning environment for hundreds of students.

Nepal has a population of 28 million people. Although Nepal’s ranking on the UN’s Human Development Index has steadily improved over the last ten years, a quarter of the population remains below the poverty line of USD 1.25 a day. Before Nepal’s revolution in 1950, only 1 child in 100 attended school. Today, the total adult literacy rate in Nepal is just over 50% nationally, but in rural communities like Lakhnawar, the illiteracy rate still nears 80%.

The community of Lakhnawar is located in the Banke region. It is about 3 km from the closest main road. Most of the people are subsistence farmers who breed livestock and grow rice, corn, and wheat to generate income. In Lakhnawar, where the illiteracy rate remains near 80%, inadequate infrastructure made learning difficult, with students often having to share overcrowded spaces or study in unsuitable environments.

Recognising this urgent need, the Knowledge E Foundation, alongside Dubai Cares and its implementing partners, took action to build a fully functional school designed to foster learning and growth for future generations.

Since its completion in September 2024, the three-classroom Lakhnawar School has become a beacon of hope for the village. Today, 328 children (155 boys and 173 girls), aged 6-14, attend classes, benefiting from a structured learning environment with desks, chairs, permanent chalkboards, and gender-specific latrines. A dedicated team of thirteen teachers delivers lessons across eight grade levels, ensuring a comprehensive education for all students.
