In light of the tragic earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria, the Knowledge E Foundation made a donation to the British Red Cross to support the humanitarian relief efforts underway. With the situation on the ground remaining critical, the foundation hopes that it can highlight the vital importance of charitable support during times of crisis.
The devastating earthquakes that took place on February 6th have been catastrophic for the people in the affected regions. Hundreds of aftershocks have left victims terrified of going back to their shattered homes, even to try and salvage any remaining possessions. The 7.8 magnitude earthquake that hit at 4:17 am (local time) was followed by another similarly destructive earthquake of 7.5 magnitude some nine hours later, shaking many of the buildings that had survived the initial earthquake to the ground.
The death toll in Turkey alone has reached upwards of 45,000 (1). In Northern Syria, the United Nations reported around 6,000 deaths (2). Hundreds of aftershocks and freezing weather conditions exacerbated this humanitarian crisis, placing rescuers in front of an even more challenging task. Staff and volunteers from the Turkish Red Crescent (Kizilay) and Syrian Arab Red Crescent continue to work and offer urgent support to the people who have been affected.
Kamran R. Kardan, founder of the Knowledge E Foundation, expressed his deepest sympathies to the people of Turkey and Syria stating, ‘It is our moral obligation to come together and extend a hand to those grappling with the devastating aftermath of this colossal natural disaster, especially that the impact of this catastrophic event will reverberate for years to come.’
Comprehensive assistance is being deployed by both the Syrian Arab Red Crescent and the Turkish Red Crescent (Kizilay) in response to the emergency, including distributing necessities like food, water, and blankets; establishing temporary shelters for survivors facing the cold weather; providing crucial medical assistance; and offering psychosocial support to those who have been traumatised (3).
As a community interest company, the Knowledge E Foundation is dedicated to supporting individuals and communities by empowering education offering support during difficult times and crises. Big or small, every action and initiative can lessen the burden. With the help of local and international aid organisations, the affected communities can hopefully recover and rebuild the lost homes and the currently damaged infrastructure.
