The competencies to educate, teach and lead in medical and health professions education differ from those needed to be an effective scientist and/or professional. In the 21st century, the culture of education, training and human capacity development is rapidly changing. In the medical and health field, training, supervision and services are fused and inseparable. The clinical learning environment (CLE) is unique as the “patient” is the focus around him all educational activities take place.
By the end of the course the participants were able to:
- Apply principles of “Adult learning” and contemporary learning theories in curriculum and course development, teaching and assessment of students and residents
- Develop “competency based” course, training program or curriculum using a systematic approach
- Use a blend of authentic “learner centered” strategies when teaching in large group, small group in the “clinical” and workplace environment

Professor Hossam Hamdy

Prof. Hamdy is the chancellor of Gulf Medical University, a Professor of Surgery and Medical Education, an internationally renowned medical educator, and an active Pediatric Surgeon. He has established several Medical Colleges in Egypt, Bahrain, UAE and has served in different senior academic and administrative positions including Vice Chancellor Medical & Health Science Colleges, Sharjah University and Director of the Institute of Leadership in Higher Education at Sharjah University, and Dean College of Medicine, Arabian Gulf University, Bahrain. Prof. Hamdy is a member of the Editorial Board of several Journals in Medical Education, is a WHO Consultant in Medical Education, and is active in research with more than 70 published studies that are highly cited and introduce several innovation and best practices in Medical Education. His work has been acknowledged and has won him many awards including The Sheikh Khalifa Award for Higher Education for “Distinguished Professor in Teaching”, the “Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award” for Best Medical College in the Arab world, “Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England “By Election” 2010, and “Fellow of the Royal College of Physician of England 2016”. Prof. Hamdy was also decorated by the Republic of France with the prestigious decoration as “Chevalier Dans L’ordre Des Palmes Academiques” / “Knight of the Order of Academic Palms” from the Republic of France for his life achievements.[:]
