The purpose of this workshop was to introduce the participants to the practical usage of VPL in medical education using AI for training and the delivery of education. This session covered advanced technologies applied to medical education; as participants practiced to use the Virtual Patient Learning (VPL) system, and ultra-realistic online simulation, based on real cases and powered by artificial intelligence. Furthermore, participants were given opportunities to assist with the system queries, potential issues in usage and develop the system based on their own cases, problems and learning expectations.

By the end of the course the participants were able to:

  • Get familiar with VPL tool
  • Know about VPL implementation in different contexts
  • Know and use all the possibilities offered by the tool
  • Try the tool and discuss about eventual doubts with the VPL expert
  • Simulate how it can be used in a classroom
  • Be prepared to train other faculty memebers on VPL use

Selected professors who will take ownership of VPL training activities in their school.

 

COURSE LEADER

Professor Hossam Hamdy

Chancellor of Gulf Medical University, Ajman, UAE MBChB, D.S, Doctorate of Surgery (DM), Alexandria University, FRCS (Edinburgh), FRCS (England), FRCP “England”, Ph.D. (Med Education, Groningen, Netherlands)

Prof. Hamdy is the chancellor of Gulf Medical University, a Professor of Surgery and Medical Education, an internationally renowned medical educator, and an active Pediatric Surgeon. He has established several Medical Colleges in Egypt, Bahrain, UAE and has served in different senior academic and administrative positions including Vice Chancellor Medical & Health Science Colleges, Sharjah University and Director of the Institute of Leadership in Higher Education at Sharjah University, and Dean College of Medicine, Arabian Gulf University, Bahrain. Prof. Hamdy is a member of the Editorial Board of several Journals in Medical Education, is a WHO Consultant in Medical Education, and is active in research with more than 70 published studies that are highly cited and introduce several innovation and best practices in Medical Education. His work has been acknowledged and has won him many awards including The Sheikh Khalifa Award for Higher Education for “Distinguished Professor in Teaching”,  the “Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award” for Best Medical College in the Arab world, “Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England “By Election” 2010, and “Fellow of the Royal College of Physician of England 2016”. Prof. Hamdy was also decorated by the Republic of France with the prestigious decoration as “Chevalier Dans L’ordre Des Palmes Academiques” / “Knight of the Order of Academic Palms” from the Republic of France for his life achievements.

Giulio Tavarnesi

He graduated in 2008 at Milan-Bicocca University in Italy, obtaining a Master Degree in Adult Learning. He is specialized in healthcare training for doctors, students, nurses and pharmacists. Since 2009 he works for Lifelike SA, a Swiss company providing advanced specialistic training, with the role of Content and Methodology manager.
