Times Higher Education (THE) has released its World University Rankings by subject for 2021. The rankings evaluate institutions based on these 11 subjects: arts and humanities, business and economics, clinical and health, computer science, education, engineering, law, life sciences, physical sciences, psychology, and social sciences.
For arts and humanities, this year’s table includes 565 universities, up from 536 last year. Stanford University tops the list with an overall score of 92.3. From Lebanon, the American University of Beirut scores 87.8 on international outlook in the rankings. Turkey is also well represented in the rankings with five universities listed. The University of Tehran from Iran is also included in the rankings.
For business and economics, Stanford University tops the list again with an overall score of 92.3. From the UAE, four universities qualified in the subject ranking with the American University of Sharjah being the highest among the four. Egypt’s Cairo University also made the list. Lebanon is again represented in the list with two universities included.
For clinical and health, the University of Oxford tops the list with an overall score of 85.8. From the UAE, the United Arab Emirates University and University of Sharjah rank notably in the list, with significant scores on international outlook. Lebanon has five institutions in the list with American University of Beirut ranking as their highest. Egypt has 15 institutions representing them in this subject ranking. The Jordan University of Science and Technology and the University of Jordan, also hold places in the list.
For computer science, the University of Oxford again tops the list with an overall score of 92.9. The UAE has two universities placing in the list with the University of Sharjah and the United Arab Emirates University. Meanwhile, eight universities from Egypt also ranked in the list. From Lebanon, the American University of Beirut and the Lebanese University also made the list. There were 12 universities from Iran in the list.
For education, Stanford University tops the list with an overall score of 92. From the UAE, the United Arab Emirates University and Zayed University hold places in the list, scoring highly on international outlook. From Lebanon, only the American University of Beirut is included this time with a high score of 82.5 in international outlook. From Iran, the University of Tehran also made the list. Turkey also placed 15 universities in this subject ranking, with Middle East Technical University placing 93rd with a score of 81.1 on industry income.
For engineering, this year’s table includes 1,098 universities, up from 1,008 last year. Harvard University tops the list for engineering with an overall score of 96.1. From the UAE, four universities were included in the list, and all have high scores on international outlook. Khalifa University, on the other hand, had a score of 100 on industry income and 72.5 on citations. From Oman, only the Sultan Qaboos University qualified in the list with a score of 77.5 on international outlook. From Egypt, 20 universities are included in the list. From Lebanon, two universities also made the list.
For law, this year’s table includes 224 universities, up from 190 last year. Stanford University tops the list for law with an overall score of 83.1. The University of Cambridge places second, and University of Oxford third, both from the UK.
For life sciences, this year’s table includes 895 universities, up from 821 last year. Harvard University again tops the list with an overall score of 95.9. From Egypt, there were 15 universities included. From the UAE, only the United Arab Emirates University has made the list with a score of 94.3 on international outlook.
For physical sciences, this year’s table includes 1,149 universities, up from 1,054 last year. California Institute of Technology tops the list with an overall score of 95.5. From Egypt, 20 universities made the rankings. Meanwhile, a whopping 37 institutions from Iran made the list. From the UAE, there were four universities included, most of them have high scores on international outlook. From Lebanon, there were two universities.
For psychology, this year’s table includes 533 universities, up from 494 last year. Stanford University again tops the psychology subject table with an overall score of 91.2. From Turkey, two universities were included in the list. King Abdulaziz University from Saudi Arabia also made the list with a score of 91.3 on international outlook.
For social sciences, this year’s table includes 791 universities, up from 720 last year. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology tops the list with an overall score of 94. Followed by University of Oxford, Stanford University, and Harvard University. From the UAE, three universities made the list with the American University of Sharjah as the highest among the three. From Egypt, two universities qualified in the rankings. From Iran, four universities rank in the list and Shahid Beheshti University scored 100 on industry income. From Jordan, the University of Jordan placed in the rankings as well. Kuwait’s Kuwait University also made the list. The American University of Beirut is the only one from Lebanon who placed this year’s table rankings.
Looking at the overall results, the University of Oxford, Stanford University, and Harvard University go head to head in all of the 11 subjects rankings.
It is worth noting that the Middle East is well represented in most tables with more universities being ranked than in previous years. Although many improvements are yet to be made, this year’s rankings encourage Middle Eastern institutions to strive towards excellency and push their institutions to be more globally competitive.
THE’s ranking methodology
The subject table uses the same 13 performance indicators as the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, but the methodology has been recalibrated to suit the individual fields for each subject.
The performance indicators are grouped into five areas: teaching (the learning environment); research (volume, income and reputation); citations (research influence); international outlook (staff, students and research); and industry income (knowledge transfer).
Each table has different subjects, weights and measures for the total subject rankings.
For arts and humanities, the subjects used to create the rankings are art, performing arts and design; languages, literature and linguistics; history, philosophy and theology; architecture; and archaeology.
For business and economics, the subjects used to create the rankings are business and management; accounting and finance; and economics and econometrics.
For clinical and health, the subjects used to create this ranking are medicine and dentistry; and other health.
For computer science, the weightings for each indicator are teaching (30%), research (30%), citations (27.5%), international outlook (7.5%), and industry income (5%).
For education, the subjects used to create this ranking are education; teacher training; and academic studies in education.
For engineering, the subjects used to create this ranking are general engineering; electrical and electronic engineering; mechanical and aerospace engineering; civil engineering; and chemical engineering.
For law, each indicator is weighed as teaching (32.7%), research (30.8%), citations (25%), international outlook (9%), and industry income (2.5%).
For life sciences, the subjects used to create this ranking are agriculture and forestry; biological sciences; veterinary science; and sport science.
For physical sciences, the subjects used to create this ranking are mathematics and statistics; physics and astronomy; chemistry; geology; and environmental, earth and marine sciences.
For psychology, the subjects used to create this ranking are psychology; educational/sport/business/animal psychology; and clinical psychology.
For social sciences, the subjects used to create this ranking are communication and media studies; politics and international studies (including development studies); sociology; and geography.
